Even if we expect to implement an indirect approach to specifying ethics for our AI systems, it's still valuable to gain a better understanding of our own ethical reasoning (and ethics in general), because:

  1. The better we understand ethics, the less likely we are to take some mistaken assumption for granted when designing the process of extrapolating our ethics.
  2. The more confidently we'll be able to generate test cases for the AI's ethical reasoning.
